Strindberg’s “Miss Julie” takes place on Midsummer’s Eve in the late 1880s and tells the story of Miss Julie, a Swedish aristocrat, who is drawn to her father’s valet, Jean, a man determined to rise above his station. The action takes place in the kitchen of Miss Julie’s father’s manor house, where Jean’s fiancée, a servant named Christine, cooks and naps while Jean and Miss Julie talk.

Richard Nelson’s adaptation of the play was first produced by at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven. This staged reading is the first of four plays that the Montauk Library will present as directed readings in 2023 as part of the Summertime Series, curated by Carolyn Balducci, the library’s adult programs director.

Admission to the reading is free and open to the public. Register at 631-668-3366 or montauklibrary.org. Montauk Library is at 871 Montauk Highway in Montauk.
