Bay Street Theater in partnership with the LGBT Network and the Long Island LGBT Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce a series of Summer Sunday Tea Dances to be held on the Bay Street Theater patio and in its adjacent indoor bar on June 9, June 30, July 7, July 14, August 11, August 18, and August 25. Each Sunday will feature a different theme.

The kickoff party on June 9, is “Swifty Sunday,” featuring Taylor Swift’s most popular hits. Other Sundays will explore themes such as “Showtune Sunday,” featuring classic Broadway hit music, and much more.

This is the third partnership between Bay Street Theater, the LGBT Network, and the Long Island LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Open to all, 21 and over, the festivities will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The origins of the tea dances can be traced back to the early 20th century, particularly in urban LGBTQ+ communities in the United States. These events typically took place in the afternoon or early evening, providing a safe and social space for LGBTQ+ individuals to gather and dance. The tea dance culture gained prominence during the mid-20th century, especially in cities like New York and San Francisco, serving as a form of resistance and expression amidst societal prejudice and discrimination. Today, while the tradition has evolved and diversified, tea dances remain an integral part of LGBTQ+ culture, fostering community, celebration and solidarity.

The mixers will be the perfect casual antidote for wrapping up a weekend on the East End. Attendees are invited to come early or stay after to catch a show on Bay Street’s mainstage, with Sunday matinee performances at 2 p.m. and evening performances at 7 p.m. The series of events will offer creative cocktail specials, light bites, fabulous music and lots of dancing.

Tickets are $20 at baystreet.org, 631-725-9500 or the box office on Long Wharf in Sag Harbor. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.
