Remsenburg artist Margery Gosnell-Qua will give a talk at East End Arts & Humanities Council (EEA) 11 West Gallery in Riverhead on Saturday, July 22, at noon. Her talk, “Making Paint Speak, Finding One’s Creative Source” is offered in conjunction with the summer invitational exhibition “Detour IV,” which features her painting “Sailing Lesson, Windy.”
Gosnell-Qua will discuss ways to express sensations in art beyond one’s sight such as motion, sound, and touch. It benefits artists and art lovers alike as all expand perspectives on creative process and interpretation.
“Sailing Lesson, Windy” conveys a day on the water with rich impasto paint strokes. It depicts a sailing lesson at Tiana Bay held by the Town of Southampton Summer Program, where Gosnell-Qua’s children learned to sail.
“I sat out on the end of a pier leaning against an umbrella to block the gusting wind. Sunfish and a Jr. Yacht sped from shore as the wind immediately filled their sails,” she noted. “Balancing my paints an anchoring my paper so it wouldn’t blow into the bay, I loaded my brushes and painted shapes of shadows and light on the patterned sails and the houses in the distance. Wind in my ears, sprays of whitecaps and damp salt air, these sensations found their way into my watercolor that day. I had captured a seed of this dynamic experience that became a springboard for my sensory memory. I painted a series of large oils from this small study.”
“Sailing Lesson, Windy” caught the eyes of the “Detour IV” curators Glen Hansen and Adam Straus as well as the writers for American Art Collector magazine, where it appears in the July issue preview article.
The piece is on view at EEA’s 11 West Gallery, 11 West Main Street, Riverhead, through August 27. Margery Gosnell-Qua’s talk at noon on Saturday, July 22, is open to the public. Registration is $5 for guests and free for EEA members. Visit eastendarts.org.
