The Rising Stars Piano Recital Series at the Southampton Cultural Center will present a concert by Tanya Gabrielian, award-winning international pianist and 2008 Pianofest participant, on Saturday, May 1, at the SCC Levitas Center for the Arts on Pond Lane in Southampton.
Ms. Gabrielian will perform the Bach-Liszt Prelude and Fugue No. 2 for Organ in A minor, Beethoven’s Sonata op. 78, Janacek’s Sonata 1. X. 1905 and Chopin’s Ballade No. 1.
Ms. Gabrielian has earned acclaim for performances all over the world. Her Southbank debut recital in the Purcell Room in London was chosen as one of the “Performances of the Year 2006” by Seen and Heard International.
A reviewer for the Glasgow Herald wrote that “Gabrielian makes the piano appear obdurate—we imagine the enormous power and potential of the instrument which it feigns not to offer readily to any mere pianist, but she has total command and we are convinced that it would only make those sounds for her.”
A reviewer for The Times of London called Ms. Gabrielian “a pianist of powerful physical and imaginative strength.”
Born in the United States in 1983, Ms. Gabrielian began playing the piano at the age of 3. She currently resides in New York City and works with Robert McDonald at the Juilliard School, where she was the only student accepted to the Artist Diploma program in 2009.
Ms. Gabrielian’s international successes include first prizes in both the 2004 Scottish International Piano Competition and the 2003 Aram Khachaturyan International Piano Competition. She has performed in renowned concert halls throughout North America, Europe, and Asia and was featured on the cover of the November 2007 issue of the magazine Clavier. In 2008, Ms. Gabrielian was chosen as the winner of the Pro Musicis International Award and was a participant in Pianofest in the Hamptons.
Tickets for Ms. Gabrielian’s May 1 performance are $15 general admission; students under 21 admitted free. Online ticketing is available at www.southamptonculturalcenter.org, or call 287-4377. For more information about Ms. Gabrielian, visit www.tanyagabrielian.com.
