On Saturday, August 16, at 8 p.m., Guild Hall presents “The Fitzgeralds: A Reading With Music.” The piece is a critically acclaimed theatrical event that blends dramatic reading with live music to bring to life the passionate and often tumultuous relationship of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald through their extraordinary correspondence.
Directed by Stephen Hamilton and originally devised by Steve Lawson, the production features acclaimed performers Melissa Errico and Alec Baldwin, who lend emotional depth and authenticity to the voices of the iconic literary couple. Using actual letters exchanged between Scott and Zelda, the reading reveals a relationship shaped by ambition, artistry, love, and conflict — the very forces that fueled some of the most celebrated writing of the 20th century.
Adding a distinctive layer to the performance is an original live score by composer and performer Forrest Gray, whose evocative music underscores the emotional nuances of the Fitzgeralds’ words. The blend of literature, performance, memory, and music invites audiences into an intimate, reflective tribute to the people behind the prose.
The production has toured extensively and received critical praise for its innovative approach to historical material, highlighting the personal costs behind artistic greatness and the enduring power of creativity and love.
