The Playwrights’ Theatre of East Hampton at LTV Studios will present a staged concert reading of Hugh R. King’s “The Lisping of a Muse” on Sunday, June 9, at 4 p.m. The show will be performed by King and his band of local community players who will present readings from John Howard Payne’s most important works including two theatrical pieces, poems, theatrical critiques from Payne’s newspaper The ‘Thespian Mirror,’ letters and more. June 9, 2024, marks Payne’s 233rd birthday.

John Howard Payne was an actor, playwright, poet, director, producer, newspaper editor, publisher and critic as well as a United States consular official. He championed the rights of Indigenous peoples and fought for the establishment of copyright laws. He wrote more than 60 different pieces for the theater including tragedies, comedies, farces, and operettas — and his work was produced in both Europe and America for nearly half a century. He also wrote the lyrics to one of the world’s most famous songs: “Home, Sweet Home.” Legend has it, he was born in East Hampton. There is a museum on James Lane in East Hampton dedicated to his legacy.

The cast includes Amanda Jones, Barbara Strong Borsack, Lenore Thomas, Melissa Friedes Cangiolosi, Martha Lee and Joe Brondo.

Tickets cost $15 in advance, $20 at the door, $5 for students and can be purchased by visiting ltveh.org. LTV is located at 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott.
