The story of the Steam Ship Circassian is a tragic one, centered around the loss of 28 lives off the coast of a Mecox beach in 1876. Among the lives lost were 10 Shinnecock Native Americans, a local handyman, four salvagers from New York, 12 British seamen and an Irish stowaway.

On Thursday, June 15, at 5 p.m., local researcher Peter Walsh will read from his writings on the tragic event at the Southampton History Museum. His presentation will have songs mixed in with accompaniment provided by John Ludlow and Iris Ornig. The story of the Circassian is how things can go so wrong and how we can possibly learn to make things right in our own lives and in our own times.

The event will take place in the historic 1825 Sayre Barn on the grounds of the Southampton History Museum, 17 Meeting House Lane, Southampton Village. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $10 at southamptonhistory.org. All ticket buyers will receive a 15 percent off coupon for food at the Southampton Publick House.
