May Pang, John Lennon’s companion during his “Lost Weekend” era, will present a special three-day exhibition, “The Lost Weekend — The Photography of May Pang,” at Keyes Art in Sag Harbor from August 1 through August 3. Pang will be on hand all weekend to meet visitors, share stories behind the images and sell limited-edition photographs.
Few people knew Lennon as closely as Pang, who captured intimate and candid moments throughout late 1973 and 1975, including scenes on the Long Island Sound. Her collection features rare works such as the only known photograph of Lennon signing the contract to dissolve the Beatles and one of the last publicly unseen images of Lennon and Paul McCartney together, taken on March 29, 1974.
The exhibition coincides with the digital release of the feature-length documentary “The Lost Weekend — A Love Story,” available now on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon and Vudu.
During this creative zenith, Lennon recorded albums including “Mind Games,” “Walls and Bridges” — featuring his only solo No. 1 hit “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” — and “Rock ’n Roll.” He collaborated with Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, George Harrison, Mick Jagger and Ringo Starr. Pang also inspired tracks like “#9 Dream” and “Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)” and played a key role in reconnecting Lennon with family, including arranging Julian Lennon’s visit after three years apart.
Pang has since published three memoirs — “Loving John,” “John Lennon: The Lost Weekend” and “Instamatic Karma” — featuring images from her private archive.
“The Lost Weekend — The Photography of May Pang” will be on view from Friday, August 1, through Sunday, August 3, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily (closing at 5 p.m. on Sunday). Keyes Art is located at 45 Main Street in Sag Harbor. For more information, visit juliekeyesart.com or call 631-808-3588.
