“Broken Arrow: The Music of Neil Young” comes to The Suffolk on Saturday, May 24, at 8 p.m. Broken Arrow performs the music of Neil Young, featuring both the rockin’ electric Crazy Horse tunes and the more acoustic, pedal steel-driven country rock material. The band delivers these classic songs faithfully while taking them out on some jamming excursions and tastefully tweaking some of the arrangements.

The band is fronted by Joe Mass, who nails the Neil Young vocals perfectly, and is a veteran virtuoso Philadelphia guitar player, singer and multi-instrumentalist. He has toured and recorded with artists such as Bootsy Collins, Robert Hazard, Essra Mohawk, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and Rick Derringer. He was music director for Grammy Award-winning artist Michael Sembello. Mass is a featured guitar player at the prestigious Dallas International Guitar Festival, alongside the likes of Sonny Landreth, Andy Timmons, Jimmy Wallace, Greg Koch, Gary Hoey and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. His vocal and instrumental interpretation of Neil Young’s music is faithful to the original, yet he puts his own stamp on these iconic songs with his incendiary playing and some cool segues and arrangements.

Danny Gold plays bass and sings harmony in Broken Arrow. A steady presence on Philly’s live music scene since the 1980s, Gold has played bass with The Dukes of Destiny, Bill Kirchen, Beats Walkin’, Ben Arnold, Wanamaker Lewis and others. On drums and vocal harmonies is Larry Freedman, another Philadelphia band veteran for decades, who owns and operates 2nd Street Productions recording studio. Both Gold and Freedman have played together in various bands and projects over the past 30 years.

Tickets are $35 to $65 at thesuffolk.org. The Suffolk is at 118 East Main Street in Riverhead.
