Salon Series, the Parrish Art Museum’s classical music program featuring world-class artists performing in an intimate setting, continues its spring season with concert pianist Wynona Wang on Friday, May 12, at 6 p.m., who will perform a program of virtuosic works by composers of the Romantic period and two works by the young Australian composer Aristea Mellos.

Wang begins the concert with the “Dante Sonata” by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, inspired Victor Hugo’s poem “Après un lecture du Dante” (After a reading of Dante). The first theme evokes the wailing of souls in hell; the second is a chorale representing the joy of souls in heaven. Following are two Preludes by Aristea Mellos: the rhythmically dynamic “Me cansé de vivir me caso” (I’m tired of living so I’m getting married) and the lush, dreamlike “Go to sleep my beloved ...” (Djoko’s Lullaby). The first act ends with Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 23, “Appassionata,” considered one of his greatest, most technically challenging, and tempestuous piano sonatas. Wang will end her program with a rarely performed sonata by Sergei Rachmaninoff, the Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 28.

Born in Beijing, Wynona Wang has performed regularly in ensembles and as a soloist in China, Indonesia, and throughout Europe and the U.S. She has appeared as a featured soloist with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Academic Symphony Orchestra, Meadows Symphony Orchestra of SMU, Dallas, the National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine, and the Romanian Mihail Jora Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy. Wang was the First Prize winner of the 2018 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and 2017 Wideman International Piano Competition, the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition in Japan, and the IX International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz in Ukraine.

Tickets for the concert are $35 ($25 members/$20 for students). Advance ticket purchase are recommended at parrishart.org. Parrish Art Museum is at 279 Montauk Highway, Water Mill.
