Suffolk presents “Glen Burtnik’s Summer of Love Concert” on Friday, September 1, at 8 p.m. This show is more than just a concert, it’s a “happening,” an authentic rock festival on one stage, celebrating the classic rock and soul of the 1960s and 1970s — the music of the Woodstock generation.
The show is performed by 16 dynamic performers featuring vocalists, a horn section, strings, keyboards, background vocalists and an incredible rock rhythm section enhanced by an exciting psychedelic lighting and video show, faithfully re-creating the songs and the psychedelically flavored spirit of that incredible era.
The “Summer of Love Concert” was created by Glen Burtnik, an alumnus of Styx, who performed the role of Paul in the original “Beatlemania” on Broadway. He is the touring bassist/vocalist for the current version of ELO, “The Orchestra;” is a member of The Weeklings and is a major label (A&M) solo recording artist and hit songwriter.
“I’ve always had a playlist on my IPod named ‘The Summer of Love.’ I’m actually a hippie at heart,” said Burtnik in a recent interview. “The music of that era is probably what moves me the most.”
Audiences will hear their favorite songs from classic artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, Joe Cocker, Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Temptations, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band, Jefferson Airplane, Curtis Mayfield, The Association, The Turtles, The Beach Boys, Mamas and the Papas, The Grateful Dead, Country Joe, Procol Harum, Melanie, Ike and Tina Turner, The Rascals, Chicago, Otis Redding, Sly and the Family Stone and more.
Tickets are $59 to $79 at thesuffolk.org. Suffolk Theater is at 118 East Main Street, Riverhead.
