Out of the blue, blue ribbon, blue in the face, blue-blooded, the blue hour, true blue. The idea of blue conjures up images as narrow as an idiom, as wide as a left brain will allow. Think indigo textiles, Picasso’s blue period, Chinese porcelain, the blues or bluegrass.
On view right now at the Southampton Cultural Center is “Chasing the Blues” a selection of work by a group of artists who paint together on Thursdays at the center. The artists challenge one another each year with a specific theme, this year, that theme was “blue,” open to any interpretation at all, literally or figuratively.
Their painting styles are as diverse as their creative backgrounds and life experiences. Their blue-period work can be seen on the back wall of the theater at the Southampton Cultural Center. Come meet some of the artists at the Southampton Artists Association annual Memorial Day show which runs at Southampton Cultural Center from Thursday, May 22, through Sunday, June 1. The reception for the show is Sunday, May 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. All are invited.
Southampton Cultural Center is at 25 Pond Lane in Southampton Village across from Agawam Park.
