For four years, professional photographer Thom Gilbert infiltrated surfer royalty — new talent alongside the oldest and most revered, all at the top of their game from New York to California and Hawaii to Spain — with a camera in his hand.

He focused not only on their lithe bodies navigating the waves, but also their faces when they came back on land, resulting in a body of intimate portraits and action shots that he bound in his newest book, “WAVES: Pro Surfers and Their Worlds,” an ode to surfing and the athletes who live and breathe it every day.

His work will also be on view at Grain Surfboards NY, which will host an opening reception and book signing on Friday night, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Amagansett store, located at 11 Indian Wells Highway.

“Thom Gilbert’s portraiture has been featured in New York magazine, Interview, Gotham, and L.A. Confidential,” according to a press release. “He has been named a Hasselblad Master and received awards from American Photo and from Photo District News. He lives in Long Island. Garrett McNamara, author of the forward in book, is a Guinness World Record holder for the largest wave ever surfed.”
