Pianist Tian Tang will perform Saturday, November 1, as part of the Liliane Questel Recital Series at the Southampton Cultural Center, offering an evening of music that explores lyricism, color and imagination across centuries of piano literature.
Tang, an artist known for her poetic and intellectually curated performances, will appear in recital at 6 p.m. The program will feature works by Schubert, Debussy, Scriabin and Poulenc — a composer especially cherished by the series’ founder, Liliane Questel. It will also include Chu Wanghua’s “Jasmine Flower Fantasia” (2002), a contemporary reimagining of one of China’s most iconic folk melodies.
Critics have described Tang’s performances as having “an air of delicacy and grace, a sound that stirs the soul, and a singular artistic allure,” according to Wangchao News. The Taizhou Evening News called her playing “a vibrant musical feast of the highest artistry.”
A doctoral candidate in musical arts at Northwestern University, Tang has performed throughout the United States, Europe and China. She is a laureate of several international competitions, including first prizes at the Weatherford (2022), Paderewski (2020), Memphis (2019), Luminarts Fellowship (2018) and Thaviu-Isaac (2018) contests.
Tang’s work often blends music with other art forms, incorporating poetry, painting and storytelling through her multimedia concert series, “Tian’s Musical Voyages.” She also curates the ARIARTS Salon Series, a forum for cross-disciplinary conversation in the arts.
In addition to her performance career, Tang teaches at Northwestern and is founder of the Interactive Piano Workshop, a project focused on collaborative and improvisatory learning. She is an honorary member of the Taizhou Musicians Association for her cultural and outreach work.
The recital will take place at Southampton Cultural Center, 25 Pond Lane in Southampton. Tickets are $25 if purchased in advance at ssc-arts.org.
