A new exhibition, “Transformations: Recent Work of Christopher Engel,” goes on view at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor on Thursday, July 27 . The show opens with a reception on Saturday, July 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. and remains on view through August 17.
Engel’s thought-provoking series delves into the profound moments of change, both visible and concealed, from various perspectives — within and without — via both figurative and abstract work.
The central theme of “Transformations” resides in capturing the essence of change. His paintings in the show offer glimpses into transformative experiences, be it a child’s awe-inspiring encounter with art for the first time in his figurative piece, “Mo Ma,” or the interplay of natural shapes evolving into intricate patterns found in his abstract works “Air,” “Fire” and “Water,” which also capture the dawn of written language through calligraphic lines.
Engel’s artistic style blends figurative and abstract imagery, and his distinct expressionistic and symbolic approach sets his work apart. He also depicts the archetypal imagery of the collective unconscious, calling on his connection to Carl Jung, whose writing and imagery has inspired him since childhood.
Through his work, Engel invites viewers to witness the extraordinary potential for change within themselves and the world around us.
