The Church in Sag Harbor will host two lectures in the coming weeks with artists Sally Gall and Jane Martin, whose works are included in the current exhibition “Clear Out to Sea,” closing on February 28.
On Saturday, February 19, at 4 p.m., Gall will speak about her series “Aerial” which is on view in the current exhibition. Images of laundry hung outdoors to dry, representations of a domestic chore, are transformed into abstract bursts of color and delight.
“What started as an exploration of humanity and an appreciation for the most basic of activities, hanging laundry to dry, has expanded into an exploration of the abstract and otherworldly,” said Gall of the work. “Ordinary identifiable objects become mysterious, strange, outside the human realm. An element of Eros is added as I am literally looking up someone’s skirt.”
Gall lives and works in New York City. Her work is in numerous museums and collections worldwide. She has published three books of photographs and has been awarded several prestigious fellowships which include two MacDowell Colony Fellowships, a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency, and Director’s Guest at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation.
On Saturday, February 26, at 4 p.m., Martin will discuss her current work from the series “Distant Lands” which is on view in “Clear Out to Sea.” Martin will also present and discuss other work in several mediums including painting, photography, video stills, as well as excerpts from video installations and films. Forces of nature have been an enduring theme in her work: water, fog, tornados, and the female form. Obsessed with nature’s power, Martin is drawn to its diverse qualities: its awe-inspiring force, its sensual and feminine nature, its depth, and mystery.
Based in East Hampton, Martin is an award-winning American multi-media artist creating in the mediums of photography, video stills and installation, filmmaking and painting. She is represented in museum, corporate and private collections worldwide, including The Parrish Art Museum, Islip Art Museum and Guild Hall Museum.
Admission to each presentation is $10. Proof of vaccination and masks are required to enter The Church, which is at 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor. For more information visit thechurchsagharbor.org.
