‘Uncommon Ground VI’ Runs Through October 7 at Bridge Gardens

The Peconic Land Trust’s Bridge Gardens “Uncommon Ground: Contemporary Outdoor Sculpture” exhibition, curated by Cheryl Sokolow/C Fine Art, is running through October 7. On Saturday, September 13, from 4 to 6 p.m., Bridge Gardens will host a reception for the show.

“Uncommon Ground VI” comes to this 5-acre botanical oasis for its sixth season showcasing outdoor sculpture by internationally recognized and museum-collected artists.

“Uncommon Ground VI” explores the relationship between the natural world and the one which we create. The dynamic of “the garden” itself, with its undulating play between the cultivated and purely natural, provides the substrate or ground from which the sculptures are seemingly born. Each sculpture embraces organisms either by virtue of subject style or material and has been placed to complement the natural surroundings of the garden.

Participating artists include Kevin Barrett, Norman Mooney, Hans Van de Bovenkamp, John Clement, Jane Manus, Jerelyn Hanrahan, Isobel Folb Sokolow, Carole Eisner, Joel Perlman, Alex Barrett, Steve Zalusky, and Aurelio Torres.

The relationship with transitory nature is seen in the sculptures of Mooney where the intricacies of form, pattern, and the sequences found in natural phenomena are captured with exquisite, highly polished surfaces providing a mirror into the natural surroundings.

Barrett presents manifestations of organic shapes and rhythms rooted in both the human form and landscape with impeccable grace and natural balance.

Sokolow’s sculptures reference the Big Bang Theory, which her process powerfully mimics as fire-welded forms explode into being.
