"Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" Brings Comedy and Chekov to Quogue

Christopher Durang’s Drama Desk and Tony Award-winning comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” requires no familiarity whatsoever with the work of Anton Chekhov, but offers Mr. Durang’s signature screwball take on Chekhovian themes to arrive at keen insights into the absurdities and agonies of 21st century life. The play continues at the Hampton Theatre Company in Quogue, running Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

A master absurdist, Mr. Durang insists Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is not a Chekhov parody. Instead, he said, he took Chekhov scenes and characters “and put them into a blender.” The concoction he whipped up is a modern-day zany drama of comical gloom. HTC’s production stars Smeralda Abel as Cassandra, Andrew Botsford as Vanya, Rosemary Cline as Masha, Amanda Griemsmann as Nina, Jane Lowe as Sonia, and Eduardo Ramos as Spike, and is directed by Diana Marbury.
