During the summer of 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, photographer Phillip Lehans created a series of images fitting for uncertain times. With social distancing and forced solitude shutting down society, Lehans saw an opportunity to work in a way modern living generally doesn’t allow.
Using a wooden camera with a manual shutter, Lehans’s prolonged exposures created an ethereal atmosphere, awash in pastels and reminiscent of watercolor paintings. The completely analog and archaic photographic process is meditative, encouraging an immersion in nature, providing a dreamlike presentation of how one would describe the scene from memory.
The resulting images are on full display in “Village Beaches,” Lehans’s new book of photographs starring the beaches of East Hampton Village. The book will be launched on Saturday, July 8, at 5:30 p.m. with Lehans taking part in a signing and print exhibition at Monika Olko Gallery in Sag Harbor.
