Shelter Island Friends of Music presents WindSync on Sunday, September 3, in a free concert at 7 p.m. at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church. The woodwinds quintet — back by popular demand — will perform the works of Beethoven, Rameau, del Aguila and Mellits (commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing).

The Labor Day holiday concert marks the group’s third appearance with SIFM since 2013, when their international career first took flight. Now WindSync is firmly established as a vibrant chamber ensemble performing wind quintet masterworks, adapting beloved music to their instrumentation and championing new works by today’s composers. The quintet breaks down the “fourth wall” between musicians and audience by moving communicatively, speaking from the heart, and often performing from memory, creating an intimate connection.

The ensemble’s players are Garrett Hudson, flute, Emily Tsai, oboe, Graeme Steele Johnson, clarinet, Kara LaMoure, bassoon and Anni Hochhalter, horn.

WindSync launched an international touring career after winning the 2012 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In 2018, they were finalists at the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. They’ve performed at the Library of Congress, Carnegie Hall, Ravinia, and Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. The quintet has been featured in educational concerts that reach over 5,000 students a year. In recognition of this work, they won the 2022 Ann Divine Fischoff Educator Award.

This is the fourth concert of the SIFM’s 46th consecutive season. There is no admission fee, though donations are always appreciated. A reception with the musicians follows the concert. Shelter Island Presbyterian Church is at 32 North Ferry Road, Shelter Island.

Save the date for Shelter Island Friends of Music’s last concert of the 2023 season will be on Sunday, October 8, at 7 p.m. when The Parker Quartet will perform.
