On Saturday, July 24, Tripoli Gallery opens “Twisted Metal X,” a solo show by Los Angeles-based artist Yung Jake, with a reception for the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. The show runs through August 23.

Known for exploring the intersections of technology and art through a diverse range of media, Yung Jake creates artistic landscapes that examine how the digital landscape and mercurial perceptions of reality inform contemporary culture. In the tenth iteration of his “Twisted Metal” series, Yung Jake has created a series of paintings and sculptures made entirely from heat treated and warped NERF guns.

Over the course of a year, Yung Jake sourced hundreds of used NERF guns from Los Angeles and New York. Engaging with the movement of matter and transformation of particles to create new forms, this new body of work pulls inspiration and materials from various adjacent subcultures. “Twisted Metal X” is also inspired by the iconic videogame of the same name from the early aughts.

Yung Jake received his BFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2012. Since then, he’s had 13 solo exhibitions and been featured in 20 group shows at institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, Hammer Museum, Guild Hall, and The Getty Center. In 2015, he was awarded the Sundance Institute and Time Warner Fellowship Grant. This will be his third solo exhibition with Tripoli Gallery, 26 Ardsley Road, Wainscott.
