The Artists are back on top.
A year after giving up 16 runs in the last inning to suffer a 19-18 loss, thought to be the most runs scored in the annual game, the Artists responded with a 15-9 victory over the Writers in the 75th rendition of the Artists and Writers Celebrity Softball Game at Herrick Park in East Hampton on Saturday afternoon.
The Artists scored four runs on six hits in the top of the first inning and added to that lead throughout the game. The Writers tried to make another comeback in the eighth inning, pulling within three runs of the Artists’ lead at 12-9 with the bases loaded and two outs. But a ground out at third base ended the threat. The Artists scored three more runs in the top of the ninth, then Joe Sopiak set the Writers down in order in the bottom of the inning to finish the game.
Bridget Evans was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after the game. A graphic designer, Evans drove in a run and caught a few fly balls in the outfield.
The game raises funds for local charities including the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center, Phoenix House Academy, The Retreat and East End Hospice.
