A 61-year-old East Hampton man was left in critical condition after being assaulted in the Amagansett Square parking lot last week. Police said they are still investigating and have yet to make an arrest.
The man, who police have not named, was discovered by employees of The Stephen Talkhouse bar on Main Street in Amagansett at about 8:30 p.m. last Monday, July 12, after he stumbled out of the parking lot with blood streaming from his wounds.
“I saw him walking toward me, pushing his bike, which I thought was odd, then I noticed he was stumbling and he said, ‘Help me,’” recalled Nick Kraus, the manager of the Talkhouse, who was on the sidewalk outside the bar at the time. “It was really scary. There was blood pouring out of the top of his head. We got towels and laid him down.”
Mr. Kraus said that the man said he’d been hit with a metal object and that he’d gotten a license plate of the vehicle of his assailant, or assailants. He also said a woman who lives nearby told him that she had seen the man arguing with someone in a black truck on Main Street and that they had then gone into the parking lot of the Amagansett Square shops. She did not see the altercation itself, however, he said.
The man was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and then transferred to Stony Brook University hospital, where he was in critical condition for several days, according to a family member. He is now in stable condition.
East Hampton Town Police said they are investigating the incident and have asked that anyone who has information about the incident call the East Hampton Town Police Detectives Division at 631-537-7575. All calls will be kept confidential.
