Marty Richards
Broadway and film producer Marty Richards, who had a home in Southampton, died on Monday, November 26. He was 80 and had been battling cancer for the past few months.
Mr. Richards earned 40 Tony Awards during his long career. Among his credits are Broadway productions of “Sweeney Todd,” “La Cage aux Folles” and “The Will Rogers Follies.” He also produced the Oscar-winning movie adaptation of the musical “Chicago,” as well as “The Shining.” He founded the movie and theater production company Producer Circle in 1976. His latest musical, “Big Maybelle: Soul of the Blues,” premiered in August at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor.
Mr. Richards supported Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, and Meals on Wheels, established a liver and kidney transplant unit at the New York University Langone Medical Center, and founded the New York Center for Children for abused children and their families.
He is survived by a brother, Bruce Klein, and a niece and nephew. His wife, Mary Lea Johnson, predeceased him.
Funeral services took place at Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan. The lights on Broadway’s marquees were dimmed on November 27 in memory of Mr. Richards.
