Dark, gloomy morning clouds eventually lifted and nearly 100 junior sailors enjoyed solid conditions for the Devon Invitational, a Peconic Gardiners Junior Sailing Association qualifier, at Devon Yacht Club in Amagansett on August 7.Thankfully, a storm cell stayed just to the south of Napeague Bay, and while there were a few sprinkles during the skippers’ meeting in the late morning and during course setup, it didn’t have an adverse effect on the jam-packed day of racing. For the second year in a row, the Breakwater Yacht Club and Community Sailing Center in Sag Harbor hosted a pair of America’s Cup 12-meter sailboats—US42 and US46—on August 1, as part of its annual summer racing series. Clarke Memorial 'Round Gardiners Island Race, hosted by Devon Yacht Club, in Amagansett on Saturday.The regatta, which measures about 25 miles long, begins off the waters of the yacht club and on the southern tip of Gardiners Island in Napeague Bay and heads north and east into Bostwick Bay, then east into the Atlantic Ocean, before the boats head back down south towards Napeague to finish back in front of Devon. In all aspects, this year’s Peconic Gardiners Junior Sailing Association Championship Regatta was the first true measure of the top young sailors on the East End.For years the PGJSA had been holding an invitational for young skippers in mid-July on Shinnecock Bay, hosted by the Southampton Yacht Club. It was open for nearly all East End sailing communities. The format was changed this year, though, so that young sailors within the PGJSA-participating clubs had to first qualify for the championship by racing in at least four races within their class.
