Dorothy F. LaMay
Dorothy F. LaMay of Montauk died at Southampton Hospital on Monday, December 19. She was 85.
Born October 8, 1926, in Bay Shore to George and Sophie Feurrigel (née Hecht), she grew up in Deer Park and graduated from the State Teachers College at New Paltz. She later earned a master’s degree in reading education from Hofstra University in 1961. In 1975, she completed a professional development course of study in special education at Fordham University.
Ms. LaMay taught primary school at Lloyd Harbor Elementary School in Huntington and later became a reading specialist at Cedar Road Elementary School in the Commack School District.
She married Bernard C. LaMay on June 26, 1949, and raised four children while continuing to teach.
Ms. LaMay purchased Deerfield Cottages on East Lake Drive in 1977 and in 1979 bought the Neptune Motel on South Edison Street. It wasn’t until 1981 that she moved full time to Montauk.
A member of the Montauk Chamber of Commerce board, Ms. LaMay helped found the Harbor Festival and was a regular volunteer. She was also a president and volunteer at the Montauk Nutrition Center, a secretary for the Friends of the Montauk Library, a coordinator and volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was named Person of the Year at Guild Hall for her work as a volunteer.
She is survived by her children, George LaMay of Greenlawn, Michele LaMay of Montauk, Joanne Horesky of Oregon, Judith LaMay Black of Montauk; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Visitation took place on Wednesday, December 21, at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A memorial service was held at the Montauk Community Church on Thursday, December 22.
