Longtime Amagansett resident Dorothy Bertha Vanderpool Borsack died on May 19 at her home, from complications due to a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 86.
Born December 8, 1921, to Joseph and Bertha (née Rhoda) Vanderpool, she was six months old when her father, a conductor for the Long Island Rail Road, was transferred to East Hampton. After attending Amagansett School, she went on to East Hampton High School, graduating in 1939.
She met her future husband, Ted Borsack, when he was stationed with the Coast Guard in Amagansett during World War II. The two married in February 1944 and raised three children.
Mrs. Borsack worked as an administrator in a doctor’s office in East Hampton and in Florida. She was head of the Altar Guild at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Hampton for more than 50 years, and was active in several civic organizations, including Order of the Eastern Star, the American Field Service exchange student program and both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The family noted, though, she most enjoyed playing cards, which she would do regularly with friends.
She is survived by a son, Ted Borsack and his wife Barbara of East Hampton; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Joseph Sabonis of Massachusetts, and Betsy and Thomas Wemyss of California; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Her husband predeceased her in 1985.
Funeral services were held on May 24 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Hampton; the Reverend Darwin Price officiated. Interment followed at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Luke’s Church Building Fund, 18 James Lane, East Hampton, NY 11937 would be appreciated by the family.
