Dr. John J. Cossentino, of St. Petersburg, Florida, and formerly of Ft, Myers, Florida, Brooklyn, Malverne, Rockville Centre, Montauk, and Southampton, died on October 5 after a life richly lived in service and kindness. He was 93.
He was born on March 23, 1932 in Giuliana, Sicily.
He was a world traveler, avid gardener and cook, choir singer and habitual whistler.
He was a retired captain in the U.S. Army.
A distinguished student and graduate of St. John’s Prep, Niagara University, and Georgetown Medical School, he was a respected surgeon at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, and chief of surgery at Southampton Hospital.
He was married to Margaret Josephine.
He is survived by his nine children, Rosalie (Michael) Carousso, Clare (Thomas) Merrick, Joseph Cossentino, John T. Cossentino, Mark (Priscilla) Cossentino, Matthew Cossentino, Susan Cossentino, Stephen Cossentino, and Diane (Mark) Hallock; his grandchildren, Ari, Gibson, Mackenzie, Cameron (Rose), Chloe, Amelia, John A., Mia, Sophia, Giovanni, Ethan, Emma, and John S.; great-grandchildren Annie and Archie Merrick; many loving relatives and friends.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk. Burial to follow for John J. and Margaret D. Cossentino at the Fort Hill Cemetery in Montauk.
