Christopher Cinque, a lifelong East Hampton Town resident, has been named the New York State Lifeguard of the Year, a recognition awarded by Smith Point Ocean Rescue.
Each year, Smith Point Ocean Rescue honors two individuals: one from its own lifeguard team, with the Smith Point Hall of Fame award, and another selected from all ocean lifeguard agencies across the state.
The honor highlights Cinque’s contributions to lifeguarding and his dedication to ensuring the safety of the community.
Cinque became certified as a Level I Surf Lifeguard in 2009. He was promoted to lieutenant of Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett in 2014 and to captain in 2015.
He received the town’s Outstanding Lifeguard of the Year award in 2016. In 2017, he was promoted to 2nd assistant chief, and in 2022 he was appointed Montauk district chief, overseeing more than 65 lifeguards. He has also served as a Marine Patrol officer since 2022.
He was commended for his response and recovery efforts during two plane crashes in 2018, showcasing his ability to handle emergencies with composure and professionalism.
In December 2019, he was awarded the East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Member of the Year.
“Chris has a calm yet commanding demeanor that not only reassures those he supervises, but also creates a strong rapport with them,” John Ryan Jr., the town’s chief lifeguard, said in a statement. “His leadership ensures that our beaches are safe, and his zero-drowning record speaks volumes about his vigilance and effectiveness.”
“I am deeply honored to receive the New York State Lifeguard of Year award,” Cinque said in the same statement. “This recognition reflects the collective effort of our entire lifeguard team in East Hampton. I’m grateful for the support from my colleagues and the community, and I remain committed to ensuring the safety of everyone who visits our beautiful beaches.”
