East Hampton Makes It to County Semifinals

The East Hampton boys tennis team reached the semifinals of the Suffolk County team tournament following a 6-1 win over No. 6 Harborfields last Thursday.

The No. 3-seeded Bonackers faced No. 2 Ward Melville in the semifinals Wednesday, results of which were not available by press time.

East Hampton earned all of its wins in straight sets May 18. The doubles team of Henry Cooper and Jagger Cohen bested George White and Greg Bohk, 6-3, 6-3; Jesse Cohen, Jagger’s older brother, and Cameron Mitchel outlasted Boden Rudloff and Jonathan Riley, 7-6, 6-4; and Miguel Garcia and CJ Baumrind beat Chris Hummel and Justin Lee, 6-3, 7-6. On the singles side, Max Astilean shut out Brody Surbeck, 6-0, 6-0; Nick Cooper edged Kyle Johnson, 7-5, 7-5; and Kiefer Mitchell, Cameron’s younger brother, took down Nolan Surbeck, 6-3, 6-2.

All of the doubles teams and Astilean also competed in the Suffolk County individual doubles and singles tournaments, with Astilean reaching the semifinals. He competed in the consolation finals Tuesday afternoon, results of which were also not available by press time.

Defeats Harborfields The East Hampton boys cross country team defeated Harborfields, 17-38, in its season opener on its home course on school grounds on September 9. According to head coach Kevin Barry, it’s only the second dual meet loss for the Tornadoes in the last five years. The Bonackers swept the top four placements to win the meet outright. Senior Sean Perez, in his first-ever cross country race, won the 2.5-mile race in 13:52, followed closely by senior Liam Knight (13:59) and sophomores Jasper Samuelson (14:09) and Watts Comly-Bolick (14:13).
