An unfortunate chain of events combined to place two East Hampton duck hunters in jeopardy late on the afternoon of New Year’s Day. According to East Hampton Town Police, Stephen Turza and Brendan Mott were in Gardiners Bay off Louse Point late that afternoon when the outboard motor on their boat died. The two men tried to set anchor, but then the anchor line broke. Police said the day began calm, but a small craft warning had been issued when the wind picked up in the afternoon. The 2019 East Hampton Town election cycle cost candidates and their supporters more than $390,000, the bulk of which came from Democratic Party supporters — and from Independence Party candidate David Gruber himself. According to mandatory New York State Board of Elections campaign disclosure filings, the last of which were filed last week, the East Hampton Democratic Party’s committee and its election fund, Campaign 2019, raised and spent more than $185,000 in its hugely successful bid to maintain nearly complete control of town government.
