East Hampton Village is updating its Comprehensive Plan, 22 years after it was last updated, with an in-person public workshop scheduled for December 6.
The plan is to look at land use, housing, transportation, economic growth, environmental sustainability and overall quality of life. Each section will explore specific challenges and opportunities, according to an October 31 statement from Billy Hajek, the village’s planner.
“The adoption of a Comprehensive Plan is essential for several reasons,” the statement reads. “First, it provides a clear vision for the village’s future and offers a framework for decision-making. This ensures that the community’s needs and aspirations guide all policies and actions by the local government. By accommodating diverse views, values and interests, the plan fosters collaboration and builds consensus among stakeholders with varying perspectives.”
It is to guide future zoning decisions intended to align with the community’s goals for land use, housing, transportation and environmental sustainability. “The plan ensures that decisions which impact the village’s growth are not made in isolation but are part of a coordinated effort to promote orderly development, protect resources and enhance the quality of life,” while balancing competing interests and creating consistency in land-use policies.
There will be multiple opportunities for participation, including in-person meetings and online activities. The December 6 workshop will start at 6 p.m. at the Emergency Services Building, at 1 Cedar Street. Residents are invited to attend and participate.
Two interactive tools will be utilized to gather feedback on important issues. An “ideas wall” can be accessed at bit.ly/ehvplan, where participants can post suggestions with virtual “sticky notes.” An interactive map, also accessed via the website, allows users to identify specific locations needing attention. Visitors can also sign up for email updates.
The website is to be updated with event details, draft documents and other information.
