Lifelong Amagansett resident Everett Russel Miller died at Southampton Hospital on March 11. He was 95.?Born at home on Oak Street in East Hampton on May 1, 1912, to Lillian and Everett Miller, he graduated from East Hampton High School in 1930 and went into business with his father, who owned a gas station on Montauk Highway where Brent's Store is now located.?In 1937, he married Alva Raynor of Hampton Bays and the couple lived in Amagansett for more than 70 years.?Known to everyone in 'Gansett" because he was always at what was known as Miller's station, he was active in many organizations. He was a volunteer fireman and one time chief of the Amagansett Fire Department, as well as a fire commissioner. He was a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett and an active member of the Masonic fraternity for more than 55 years. In addition, he was a director at the Bank of the Hamptons from 1967 to 1983.?Eventually Mr. Miller expanded his business, and Miller's Fuel Company began delivering fuel oil locally.?During World War II, Mr. Miller served in the U.S. Army's Service Squadron 474th Air Service Group. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after serving in northern France, Rhineland and central Europe. His decorations included a Good Conduct Medal; Europe, Africa, and Middle East ribbons with three stars, and a Purple Heart.?He took very good care of his boats and his cars and he enjoyed participating in amateur theater. Survivors this week said Mr. Miller was a good friend to many and a man of his word.?In addition to his wife, Alva, Mr. Miller is survived by nieces and nephews, many dear friends and a few good fishing buddies.?A funeral mass was held on March 17 at the First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett with the Reverend Robert B. Stuart, Pastor Emeritus, and the Reverend Steven E. Howarth, Pastor, officiating. Interment followed at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton.?The family expressed gratitude this week to caregivers, both in the hospital and in the Miller home, and extended special thanks to the McCoy family and local volunteers—the Emergency Medical Technicians and others—who responded when Mr. Miller's health failed.?In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Amagansett Fire Department, P.O. Box 911, Amagansett, NY 11930 or the Amagansett Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 470, Amagansett, NY 11930 would be appreciated by the family.
