Sara Davison, the outgoing executive director of the Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation, presented the East Hampton Town Board with a check in the amount of $67,671.50 on July 16.

The check represents a matching grant the foundation secured from the Suffolk County Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program, which is funded by a 0.25 percent sales tax and allocated to municipalities and nonprofit organizations for projects to protect and restore groundwater and surface water resources.

The figure matches other money expended by the foundation and the town to complete the planning for a stormwater remediation design at the Montauk Highway rest stop at the head of Georgica Pond. Design and engineering have been completed. It is to improve capture and drainage before stormwater reaches the pond, reduce impervious surfaces, and improve wildlife habitat as well as public access and enjoyment of the pond.

“We could not have gotten to this point without the skilled leadership and hard work of the town’s Natural Resources Department, particularly Kim Shaw and Mellissa Winslow,” Davison told the Town Board. “We all look forward to seeing the completion of this critical project.”

Suffolk County Searching for Solutions to Meschutt Beach Vehicle Overflow

Suffolk County is searching for a solution to the chronic overflow of cars at Meschutt Beach County Park during the summer season. On sunny summer days, the throng of beachgoers that flow to the only bayfront county-run bathing beach on the South Fork quickly fill the beach parking lot. Later-arriving cars soon begin to line the roadsides of the access roads and take up parking spots that are intended for boat owners and guests at the nearby Shinnecock Marina, which the county also owns.
