The legislation signed by President Obama on Tuesday:
Gives tax credits and other assistance to up to 97,000 families and 20,900 small businesses to help pay for coverage.
Improves Medicare for 112,000 beneficiaries, including closing the prescription drug benefit “donut hole.”
Extends coverage to 24,500 uninsured residents.
Guarantees that 8,700 residents with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.
Allows 49,000 young adults up to age 26 to obtain coverage on their parents’ insurance plans.
Reduces the cost of uncompensated care for hospitals and other health care providers by $38 million annually.
Prohibits annual and lifetime limits on how much insurers pay out for health care.
Eliminates rescissions for individuals who become ill while insured.
Bans coverage denials for pre-existing conditions.
Limits the amount of insurance companies’ administrative expenses, profits and other overhead.
Offers individual health coverage at group rates through new health insurance exchange.
Provides middle class families with incomes up to $88,000 for a family of four with tax credits to help pay for coverage in insurance exchange.
