East Hampton Town Police charged a Holbrook man with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with an injury after a motor vehicle accident involving an electric assist bicycle, commonly known as an e-bike, on Saturday afternoon in downtown Montauk.
According to police, Suraj Gaire, 28, was driving a 2022 Honda Pilot south on South Edgemere Street near the intersection of South Euclid Avenue at approximately 5:53 p.m. when his vehicle struck an e-bike. Gustav Rowan, 31, of North Carolina, was operating the e-bike, and Donald Gordon, 28, of Florida, was a passenger on the bicycle.
Police said Gaire fled the scene in the Honda and was arrested at approximately 7:05 p.m. following a traffic stop on Cranberry Hole Road in Amagansett.
According to police, Rowan was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition. Gordon was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he is also currently listed in stable condition.
Gaire is scheduled to be arraigned at East Hampton Town Justice Court at a later date. The investigation is ongoing, and police have asked anyone with information to call the 631-537-7575.
