East Hampton Town Police arrested a Montauk teen on Monday after they say he struck a pedestrian on an Amagansett roadside and fled without stopping to help the man.

Daniel Campbell, 19, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony, after police say he struck an 18-year-old visitor from Hong Kong, Devesh Samtani, who was walking on the side of Old Stone Highway, near Eastwood Court on Monday night about 11:30 p.m.

After striking Mr. Samtani, police say Mr. Campbell’s 2012 Honda Pilot sped away from the scene.

But a witness to the accident helped police identify the vehicle and ultimately led them to Mr. Campbell’s home in Montauk, where he was located and arrested about three hours later.

Mr. Samtani was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he remained in serious condition as of Wednesday morning, police said.

Mr. Campbell was to be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court. He faces up to 7 years in prison if convicted.
