SCWA To Receive Settlement From 3M Company in 'Forever Chemical' Lawsuit

The Suffolk County Water Authority has announced that it would receive its first payment as part of a nationwide class-action lawsuit against the 3M Company, a manufacturer of PFAS, which are often referred to as “forever chemicals,” because they do not break down over time. The chemicals have polluted Long Island’s sole-source aquifer, and SCWA will receive part of a $10.5 billion settlement involving thousands of water providers across the country. SCWA expects an initial payment of $34 million, about 20 percent of the $170 million it will receive in total from the settlement.
