Hook Mill Road in East Hampton Village will be closed, beginning Monday, August 5, while the Long Island Rail Road installs new foundations for the train trestles that pass over — and sometimes snag taller trucks traveling on — North Main Street and Accabonac Road.
A minor route, Hook Mill Road will be closed around the clock through November 10, although one lane will be opened on weekends to allow congregants to attend services at the nearby East Hampton Methodist Church.
Clearance for the train trestles is not quite 11 feet, which is too low for many of today’s trucks, and collisions interrupt both car traffic and train service. The trestles are being raised to 14 feet as part of a $20 million project that will also involve replacing the century-old stone foundations and an interruption of train service from October 15 to November 10.
