Immediate Necessity

I want to thank you for your coverage of my presentation at the recent East Hampton Board of Education meeting [“Hampton Life Owner Proposes Building Affordable Housing on East Hampton High School Grounds,” 27east.com, July 12].

From the number of people who have contacted me to offer support and encouragement, I believe the issue has hit a nerve. As it should. We are facing a crisis in housing in general, and tackling this subset of affordable housing is an absolute, immediate necessity.

In the course of my work, I talk with dozens of businesses every week that repeat the same story: no workers, no business; no business, no community. Whether it is doctors or nurses, teachers or town employees, head chefs or dishwashers, the lack of employees is crippling every aspect of this area to provide for its residents, second-home owners and visitors. It cannot be allowed to fester.

Luckily, we have a plan. Given the opportunity, we can provide one- to three-bedroom townhouses for $375,000 to $575,000. To do it, we need two things: land and a suitable density.

Working with the Town of East Hampton, we have identified a number of town-owned parcels 5 acres and larger that are suitable. And if given four to eight units per acre, we can make those numbers.

Having laid the groundwork over the past year, the time is finally at hand when the town will make the choice to let us get going or wait. I have every confidence that they know the problem, understand the existential nature of the threat and are motivated to do the right thing.

The town is well-equipped with expert planners and compassionate board members who both know the severity and importance of this issue and in whom I have faith will help us move forward. I look forward to meeting with them soon to put this essential program into high gear.
