I would like to congratulate Emily Agnello and John Ryan Sr. for their recent election to the East Hampton Board of Education. Although I would have liked to have been chosen, I respect our elective process and believe that both of them will be valuable members of the board.
While there are several issues that I would have raised had I been elected, there is one that is most important to me: the preparation of our high school students to become the civic leaders of the future. Included in that preparation is the history of our country, with special emphasis on the role of our two most important documents: the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
If I had been elected, I would have offered to provide a small booklet that includes both of these documents. Furthermore, I would have suggested that the board establish a writing contest for seniors and/or American history students who could submit a 500-word essay about the importance of these documents to them. Furthermore, I would petition the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion to provide a monetary reward to the three best entries.
I am willing to do much of the legwork to accomplish this goal but ask all seven members to support this plan to promote the positive importance of these two documents that we must teach our youth, our soon-to-be replacements.
