Longtime Sagaponack summer resident Fordyce Barker St. John Jr. died on March 31 at Meadow Ridge in Redding, Connecticut. Known as John St. John, he was 88.
Son of Jane R. and Dr. Fordyce B. St. John of Manhattan, he was a graduate of Deerfield Academy and Princeton University, class of 1945. He served with the 84th Infantry Division in World War II, including seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge.
He began his career in the oil industry, working for 15 years for Carter Oil, a division of Exxon. He then worked at Chemical Bank and finally retired from the Bank of New York as chairman of the Natural Resource Department.
Mr. St. John and his wife Lisa (née Polhemus) St. John were longtime residents of New Canaan, Connecticut, and Sagaponack, and members of the Bridgehampton Club since 1947. Mr. St. John was an avid golfer who served as president of the Country Club of New Canaan. He was also a member of the New Canaan Zoning Board of Appeals and the board of the New Canaan Inn.
Mr. and Mrs. St. John moved to Meadow Ridge, a continuing care community in Redding, Connecticut, in 2004.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is also survived by two daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Chris Abelt of New York City and Susan St. John of Massachusetts; a son, John St. John and his wife Megan of Connecticut; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
No services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Connecticut Humane Society, 455 Post Road, Westport, CT 06880 would be appreciated by the family.
