Margaret Cituk
Margaret Cituk of Southampton died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 13, at Southampton Hospital. She was 96.
Born to Tunis and Mary Kiernan Miller in Southampton on November 7, 1916, she was the oldest of three sisters, Marion Cerveny, who predeceased her, and Bessie Croke, who is a patient at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton.
She was married to Asa Cituk, who died last year. According to her daughter, Mary Vorpahl, she was an excellent homemaker who loved to knit and crochet until she lost most of her eyesight. She also loved baking, especially at Christmastime, and playing bingo and cards. She was an excellent swimmer, but never had any interest in learning how to drive and never did. She was a stay-at-home mom and housewife. She never belonged to any social groups, nor did she ever vote in an election; declaring all politicians a bunch of crooks. Ms. Cituk also opened practically every scallop her husband Asa ever caught and also helped him pack the bluefish he caught in Shinnecock Bay.
After her husband retired, the couple traveled cross country by car to California. They also spent winters in Florida.
Ms. Cituk is survived by her sister, Bessie Croke; her daughter Mary Vorpahl of East Hampton; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was held on Monday, March 18, at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Interment followed at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.
