Marion H. Good
Marion H. Good, a resident of Springs for almost exactly 50 years, died on August 1 at Southampton Hospital from lingering effects of a stroke suffered six years ago. She was 93.
Born May 31, 1917, in Manhattan to Mary (née Davis) and Walter Hewitt, who immigrated from Ireland and England respectively, she was the oldest of three siblings. Her father died when she was 7, and she was raised by her mother, alongside her sister and her brother in Queens Village. She graduated from public high school in Queens.
She met Bill Good while they were both working for Morgan Guaranty Trust in Manhattan, and the two were married on October 17, 1942, in Queens Village. Mr. Good went off to war, serving in the U.S. Army in France and Germany, while she raised their first child. The couple eventually settled in Merrick, where they raised their five children. It was in 1960 that they built a second home in Springs, which was to become their primary home.
According to family, she was a private person who expressed herself and let you know where you stood with her. She loved the thrust and parry of politics, and talked of it often, but would not have been one to enter the fray. She enjoyed reading and was especially fond of birds, learning to identify them by appearance and song. Her ability to identify birds by song proved very rewarding after she lost most of her eyesight to macular degeneration 10 years ago. But having lost her sight did not diminish her spirit, survivors said.
Although her stroke in 2004 placed great limitations on her, it did not keep her from making a dozen car trips to Portland, Maine, to visit her sister Florence Mullen. She last visited her sister on Memorial Day weekend to celebrate their birthdays, as her sister turned 91 on May 29.
Days after returning from her trip to Maine, she attended the spring musical at Our Lady of the Hamptons in Southampton. She loved children and loved to hear them sing. Family recalled that when asked if she liked the musical, she responded, “Did I like it? I loved it!”
She is survived by three sons, Bill Good Jr. of Springs and Peter Good and Dennis Good, both of Connecticut; two daughters, Joan Barrett of Ohio and Patricia Bond of Arizona; a sister, Florence Mullen of Maine; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a niece, Lynda Mullen. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Good Sr., in 1989, and a brother, Walter Hewitt.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. Funeral services will be on Friday, August 6, at 10 a.m. at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Most Holy Trinity Church, 79 Buell Lane, East Hampton, NY 11937-3298 would be appreciated by the family.
