Laura Martinez was the only runner, boy or girl, to represent Bonac at the Section XI Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on November 6.
The sophomore finished the girls Class B race in 22:01.60, which did not qualify her for the state championships. Runners can qualify for states either as part of the winning team or the next five top individual runners.
It turned out that this year the top five runners overall in the race took those individual spots. Bayport-Blue Point senior Sophia McInnes won the race in 19:23.10, followed by Mount Sinai freshman Cali Gabrielson (19:38.50), Harborfields sophomore Sayla Fives (19:58.30), Westhampton Beach senior Lily Strebel (20:20.90) and Elwood-John Glenn eighth-grader Sloane Hinke (20:41.50).
Sayville won its fifth consecutive county title, and with those runners automatically qualifying for states, Martinez finished 11th among individual runners, 15th overall.
