Visit Montauk has unveiled the latest iteration of the selfie spot in front of the Visitors Center at 742 Montauk Highway, Montauk.
During summer 2022, Visit Montauk launched a new revolving artist installation — taking the white MTK letters in front of the Visitors Center and turning them into a local artist’s blank canvas. Last year’s installation, painted by Kylie Ogburn, was titled “Above and Below the Sea” and featured a cross section of ocean life.
This year’s version of the MTK sign was just completed by local art teacher Angela Filangeri. Her design was chosen by the board of directors in April, and Angela has spent most of May in front of the Visitors Center bringing her vision to life.
Filangeri has been a Montauk resident for almost three years and started working as an art and enrichment teacher at Montauk school in September 2020. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from SUNY Plattsburgh and a master’s in art education at Hofstra University.
“Teaching and creating art here in Montauk is a dream and I am lucky to be a part of this community,” said Filangeri.
The striking, sunset colors of the new design, complete with a silhouette of the Montauk Lighthouse and a whale breaching, make the letters really stand out.
Jennifer Fowkes, executive director of the Montauk Chamber of Commerce and Visit Montauk said, “Having Angela paint the letters this year is really meaningful. She’s the art teacher at the Montauk School and such a huge part of the community. We here in the Visitors Center were lucky enough to witness her creative process. It was amazing to see that vision come to life, and I even witnessed a few of her students stop by to watch her during the last few weeks.”
