A 20-year-old who had been living with his mother on Three Mile Harbor Road for the past year was accused of stabbing her on Sunday, July 7, following a birthday party at their home.
Carlos Pucha-Guaman, 20, pleaded not guilty in East Hampton Town Justice Court hours after the 1:58 a.m. arrest by East Hampton Town Police on July 7.
Mr. Pucha-Guaman was charged with assault in the second degree with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon, a class D felony, in addition to possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.
According to the court records, Mr. Pucha-Guaman intentionally stabbed his mother, who has been living in East Hampton for several years, beneath her left breast with a kitchen knife, causing a small laceration. Ms. Guaman suffered “substantial pain” that required medical attention at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
In a statement written by the mother at the hospital on Sunday night, she told police her family was having a birthday party for her niece in their backyard.
“My son and the others were drinking Corona beers at around 1 a.m.,” the mother told police, and at that point she told the guests that the party was over. “I remember that when I told everyone to come inside, my son had become angry with me,” she said in the statement.
Once she entered the dining room area, she felt her son come up behind her and put his arm around her neck, holding a kitchen knife to the left side of her neck, the statement said. She said her son told her that he was going to kill her. She tried to push away the knife, which cut her right hand and neck, the police report stated.
“As I was trying to get away, he then took the knife and stabbed me in the chest area,” she said.
Her 13-year-old son pulled Mr. Pucha-Guaman off her, and she fell to the floor and begged for someone to call an ambulance.
“Once I was separated from my son, I heard him acting out of his normal character,” she explained, adding that her attacker had said that his sister, who had died years earlier in Ecuador, told him to kill their mother because she had abandoned them.
She told police that her son has had similar incidents in the past, adding that when he was 8 years old and in Ecuador, he tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrists. She also told police that in the past year her son had told her that he was going to kill her and then kill himself. Up until this point, Mr. Pucha-Guaman has not had any psychiatric treatment, his mother told police.
Mr. Pucha-Guaman failed to post $5,000 bail set by East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky. As of Friday, he remained in police custody.
