Regarding the oh-so-darling plan of hiring goats to eat “invasive” plants along the Benson Reservation [“Goats Are Coming to Montauk To Eradicate Invasive Vines,” 27east.com, July 19]: Why weren’t we property owners along Old Montauk Highway consulted with, or even informed of this project until it was a fait accompli?
We residents walk down to the beach paths closest to our homes or businesses. But, apparently, next summer we will not be able to, because it will be fenced off for the goats. Shelters will be built for the goats, and we will have to listen to goats. Is anyone going to pick up the goat waste? Or do we just get to smell that too, along with our guests and customers? For months at a time? What about the annual fireworks?
I might also point out that the honeysuckle is a native plant, as are the fox grapes. Wildlife and bird life is abundant in the area. I walk there every day and have known it my entire life.
What I believe is that some wealthy people want to improve their view as they drive into town, and somehow this project was rammed through the Town Board without even asking those of us who will be affected.
This is solving a nonexistent problem. Leave our beach alone.
