The sixth-graders in the Amagansett School were so touched by the devastation in Haiti that they have decided to put together a fund-raiser on Friday, February 12. Students in grades three through six at the school have been invited to participate in a badminton tournament, and students in kindergarten through second grade have been invited to participate in a Connect Four tournament. Willing participants will make a donation to Hearts for Haiti to purchase “School in a Box Kits” from UNICEF.

On Friday, February 5, the parents of Kat Brunn and Nancy Parson’s fourth and fifth grade classes were treated to a spectacular performance drama led by Guild Hall’s Kate Mueth. The students put on theatrical vignettes
from the book “Little House on the Prairie,” which they had read with the assistance of reading specialist Marilee Talmage. It was quite an impressive show by all, including my daughter Lucy Pearl and Travis Loschen, as
Laura Ingalls and Pa being attacked by wolves played by Lina Bistrian, Maddie Hughes and Noah Gualtieri, among others.

At the First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett, the Reverend Steven E. Howarth will preach at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, February, 14. Those coming to worship are asked to bring nonperishable food items to be distributed to local food pantries.

The annual meeting of the congregation will take place following worship service; all members are asked to attend.

The deacons will hold a Soup and Chili Supper on Saturday, February
27, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Scoville Hall. Tickets are $10 each, a real bargain
for a bowl of soup and chili and
other treats. For tickets or more information, please call Arlene Hallock at 324-5149.

Reminder: the Amagansett satellite of the East Hampton Food Pantry is open every Tuesday in Scoville Hall on Meeting House Lane from 4 to 6 p.m. Volunteers and donations are always welcome.

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, located across the street from the post
office, holds its worship service on
Sundays at 10:30 a.m. All members
of the community are welcome to attend.

The Amagansett School Board met on Tuesday, January 26. Accolades were given to Marcie Angel, the school librarian, for administering the NWEA tests and for providing the library for the science fair. As I promised last week, here are all the official winners.

Fourth grade: first place, Lucy Pearl Emptage; second place, Lina Bistrian; third place, Tabatha Mello-Arruda. Fifth grade: first place, Katie McGovern; second place, Arliegh Rodgers; third place: the team of Aspen Segelkgen and AbbyQuin Nanci-Ross. Sixth grade: first place, Julian MacGurn; second place, Nicky Hoffman; third place, Mia Karlin-Cappello.

In town news, the new restaurant on Main Street, Exile, hosted a luncheon for the prekindergarten classes. The magnificent chef, Tim Bando of Meeting House fame, hosted the meal. Tim and Meghan have two—soon to be three—children in the school. Thanks Tim, and what a nice way to give back to the community.

Save the date: Saturday, March 6, there will be a Charity Ride to benefit James MacWhinnie. It will take place at the B East Studio from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost is $60 per hour. You can ride for one or both hours. There will be a party afterward at the other new restaurant in town, D’Canela. There will be a $30 minimum donation at the door for those that did not ride in the event. For more information, check out jamesmacwhinniefund.com or eastfit.com. While you are there, check out the beautiful studio and its impressive roster of teachers.

Don’t forget about Family Game
Night on the third Thursday of every month at the Amagansett Free Library. The next one is February 18 at 6 p.m. Snacks and game boards are provided; just bring your family. No registration
is required. For more information, please call Kelly at the library at 267-3810.

The Town of East Hampton is hosting a Winter Break Recreation Program from Tuesday February 16, through Thursday, February 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, at both the John Marshall Elementary School and Montauk School. For more information or to register, check out the Department of Parks at 159 Pantigo Road or the Montauk Playhouse.

Speaking of the Montauk Playhouse, a five-week Introduction to LAX Co-ed Clinic held for children in kindergarten through fourth grade began on February 6. It is held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays and is sponsored by East Hampton Youth Lacrosse and Body Tech Fitness Center. The dates are February 20, 27, March 6 and 13. The fee is $50 payable to Body Tech on the first session.

Girl’s lacrosse continues for $5 a night on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Amagansett Indoor Rink located across the street from the Youth Park. This clinic is open to any girl in grades five through nine.

Don’t forget about the third annual Junior Lifeguard Benefit Party on Friday, February 26, from 7 to 11 p.m., at ENE Restaurant in Montauk. Tickets are $30 per person or $55 per couple. For tickets, information, or to make a donation, please call Mary Lownes at 267-8447.

Reminder: Junior Lifeguard Training and Testing begins on Sunday, March 14, and will be held through June 20 at the East Hampton RECenter pool from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.

More school news: Watch your children on the computer! On Monday, February 4, Peggy Bianchi and Robyn Mott presented an introduction to “Surfing the Web Safely” at Coffee and Conversation hosted by the school’s Superintendent Eleanor Tritt. There is some scary stuff out there.

The PTA hosted bingo on Tuesday and Thursday, February 2 and 4, for kids in grades one through six and, yes, Lucy Pearl did win again!

Have a great week and a Happy Valentine’s Day. Please send me any Amagansett news you would like to share.
