Over 130 people came out to participate in this year’s Great Bonac Footraces in Springs on Labor Day.

Joshua Jastemski, 44, of Medford won the 10K race, considered one of the longest running 6.2-mile races on Long Island, having started over 40 years ago, in 40:50.97, a mile pace of 6:34. Fernando Soto, 33, of Shelter Island, placed second overall in 42:33.73, and Chris Lorenzini, 39, of Sag Harbor, placed third in 43:49. Nicole Furlong, 33, of East Hampton was the female champion of the 10K, crossing the finish line in 44:14. Alec Rainsby, 62, of Brooklyn rounded out the top five, finishing in 45:59.12.

Sergey Avramenko, 38, of Hampton Bays won what was a pretty competitive 5K race in 16:48.12, a mile place of 5:24. Neil Falkenhan, 39, of East Hampton finished right behind Avramenko in 16:58.76, while Luel Tela, 32, of Huntington Station placed third in 19:37.64. Eric Perez, 25, of Montauk finished fourth in 19:51.90, and Juan Torres, 15, of East Hampton finished fifth in 19:59.77.

Dylan Cashin, 17, of Amagansett and good friend Ryleigh O’Donnell, 17, of East Hampton were the first two females to cross the finish line in the 5K. Cashin finished in 20:39.21, while O’Donnell crossed in 21:26.27. Both are expected to lead the East Hampton girls varsity cross country team this fall.

Proceeds from the race are shared between the Springs Fire Department and the Old Montauk Athletic Club, which puts on the race. OMAC has been supporting local athletes for decades, and in a number of different ways, such as scholarships — they provide three $1,000 scholarships to East Hampton High School graduating seniors each year. But it also helps time the wellness race that the school district puts on and also helps the cross country program get to its out-of-sate invitational each year.
